Review

There are plenty of mainstream brands out there in the market today, and many of them do the same stuff. The same technology. The same advertising in every magazine. The same concept stores. Why not be different, and be damn good at it...

BMC bikes have long been flaunting their stuff in the professional peloton. Their name has recently been bolstered by the incredible performances of Cadel Evans, all aboard a BMC machine. So if it's good enough for a rider as particular as 'Cuddles' Evans, surely it's good enough for you!

The frameset on the BMC Team Machine SLR02 is beautifully designed, with the trademark BMC triple triangle. BMC are obsessed with the quality of their carbon because in today's age of carbon warfare it's what sets a brand apart. BMC like their acronyms, and they've called their latest carbon sculpting process 'ACE Technology' which stands for Accelerated Composites Evolution. The process behind this concept frame design involves a computer program modelling over 30,000 frame designs each with different frame angles and geometries. The end goal is to produce a bike with minimal weight, optimal performance and maximum durability.

The affordable performance comes from Shimano, with a full Shimano 105 groupset all over this BMC Team Machine. A dual front compact chainring and 10 speed shifting at the rear will have all your gearing needs covered, no matter your speed (or lack thereof). A color matched set of Shimano wheels will keep you rolling, along with the renowned Continental Ultra Race tires.

A brand we're starting to see much more of, especially on performance bikes, has been used on this BMC as well. The famous 3T componentry brand is fitted in the form of handlebars and stem, providing supple handling and plenty of adjustment options, should the need arise.

The second most important part, depending on personal opinion, is the saddle. Fizik have thrown in an Ardea saddle to keep you comfortable on those long rides. Featuring Manganese rails, this particular saddle will support any reasonable weight, regardless of terrain and bike setup. So there's no need to worry about if the saddle needs replacing, once you buy the bike.

The only real downsides are the slightly weighty entry level wheels (but typical for this component level), the 'getting a bit boring' red and carbon paint job and the fact that BMC does charge a decent price for the honor of riding one of the world's best frames. These are all obviously quibbles and hopefully would not deter a cyclist looking for a great bike from checking the SLR02 out.

Perfect for the discerning cyclist for regular riding and some weekend club races.
